Woodford & Sons Address: 219 Nod Road, Avon Typology: 5 tobacco barns are on this property Historic significance: this farm originally grew hay, vegetables, and produced milk from dairy herds. Outdoor tobacco is said to have been grown here, starting in the mid-19th Century. Eventually, Chester Randolph Woodford, founder of the farm, introduced shade tobacco to the Farmington Valley in 1905. It was grown on this farm until the 1980s. The Woodfords were charter members of the Windsor Shade Tobacco Company, a grower's cooperative formed in 1937. Use historic: shade tobacco storage Use present: the 5 remaining barns are used for storage of farm equipment; a vintage photo shows that there were at least 13 tobacco barns.
