Field Notes

This property belongs to the State of Connecticut, compare with the Lockwood Farm, Hamden, which belongs to the CT Agricultural Experiment Station Board of Control. See also 123 Huntington Street, New Haven; 890 Evergreen Avenue, Hamden http://www.ct.gov/caes/cwp/view.asp?a=2812&q=382788 The Connecticut Valley, with its deep fertile soils and accommodating climate attracted the first settlers and remains the center of the State’s agriculture today. The Valley Laboratory in Windsor was established by the Board of Control in 1921 to investigate growing tobacco in shade tents. Research on the culture of shade and broadleaf tobacco continues today. In addition scientists now seek practical methods for controlling plant diseases, insect pests and weeds in a variety of fruits, vegetables, ornamental trees and shrubs. In forests, entomologists are exploring biological control of introduced insect pests including hemlock woolly adelgid. Soils are also studied and analyzed. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.140506449360477.35715.126256207452168&type=3 Photos from the Connecticut Valley Tobacco Museum
