Historic Significance

Architectural description:

This is a 1 1/2-story converted shed or workshop. The main facade faces south and the ridge-line of the shed runs east-west, parallel to this portion of Birch Mountain Road. The main entry is a pass-through door towards the west corner of the south eave-facade of the shed. Off center towards the east is a set of two windows; the west window is single-pane and the east window is six-pane. The west gable-side of the shed has wood lattice along the main level and a pass-through door centered beneath the apex of the roof in the gable attic. Extending west from the eave line of the shed is a small wood deck with lattice on the north side. The shed has mortared field-stone walls except for the gable attic, which have board-and-batten siding painted brown. The gable roof of the shed has differing slopes sharing a common ridge. The roof is covered with asphalt shingles.

Historical significance:

A shed is typically a simple, single-story structure in a back garden or on an allotment that is used for storage, hobbies, or as a workshop. Sheds vary considerably in the complexity of their construction and their size, from small open-sided tin-roofed structures to large wood-framed sheds with shingled roofs, windows, and electrical outlets. Sheds used on farms or in industry can be large structures.

Relationship to surroundings

The shed is behind and to the north of the house that it is associated with. The ridge-line of the house is perpendicular to the ridge-line of the shed. A driveway runs from Birch Mountain Road to the south, by the house to the east and ends to the east of the shed, in an area that may end up an addition, perhaps as use as a garage.  A large yard is to the west and northwest of the house as well as to the west and north of the shed. A picket fence demarcates the boarder of the 1.12 acre site to the south, west and north. A line of trees demarcate the site to the east. Further east is a track of open space. The area surrounding the site is residential, light open space, light agriculture and woodland.
