Field Notes

19th century icebox building for food storage close to former orchards. About 25' x 25' mortared fieldstone set nearly 3 feet below ground level with wood frame roof and sheds extending another 8' or so on opposite sides. About 20' to peak. Wood framed interior insulated with sawdust filled tongue and groove planked walls. Ventilation channels built into walls leading to loft, where lathe over sheet metal floor allows melting ice water to be collected and piped outside. Centered cupola. See picture. New copper shingle roof. Long shed walls need rebuilding. Not in historic district, but owner a local historic district commissioner dedicated to preservation..., as time and budget may allow. smile
