Field Notes

circa 1928 Brooder bank barn has cedar shake siding, asphalt roof shingles and three over three double hung windows. The lower level was probably used as a cold-cellar and later double hinged doors were added to accomodate a vehicle. Chicks were hatched in this barn and eggs were cleaned and sorted for sale. When the chicks were old enough to be on their own chicks were moved into the Chicken House. The original Chicken House was a gable style barn. Later the barn was rebuilt to half its original size using the original foundation stones and windows and door. Part of the original foundation stones can be seen in the foreground of the Chicken House. The Chicken House has vertical siding and asphalt roof shingles Poultry was a primary agricultural product in the Stepney area of Monroe during this era. Located in the Stepney Local Historic District.
