Field Notes

Currently for Sale by Cushman and Wakefield Posted Sign Reads "...with its history preceeding the Revolutionary War of 1776. According to local historians, the south end of the building was constructed... between 1750 and 1775. These same historians point to legends of British Redcoats, after their landing 1,000 strong at Compo Beach, 10 miles south in Westport passing by the Inn in pursuit of the retreating forces of the Colonies which fled toward Danbury... The Inn was operated as a grist and lumber mill in the 1800's, being known as the Davis Mill, and then owned by Timothy Carver, Rye and buckwheat, grown in Weston fields, were ground at the mill..." From Treasures of Connecticut Libraries... "In 1749, Eleazor Sturges accepted a quitclaim from his partner Ephraim Jackson for two-thirds of 240 acres. The property included a house and a sawmill which became one of Weston's earliest businesses. The building was originally a sawmill but in 1809 Zalmon Sturges purchased the property and obtained three acres of land with a sawmill and a gristmill. The property was at that time being used to grind grain. In 1866, the property was purchased from William Davis and included three acres with grist, saw and cider mills, a dwelling house, a barn and other buildings. In 1891, Simeon Carver purchased the property, and it was then known for many years as the Davis/Carver Mill. Frank Cobb purchased the property in 1912 and changed it to a weekend and summer retreat. In 1934, the building became an eating and drinking establishment." Source: http://cslib.cdmhost.com/ctlibs/browse.php?CISOROOT=%2Fp128501coll0&CISOSTART=1,101
