Field Notes

Date of house: 1773, barn (mill) 1823. Barn difficult to see from public road. According to the owner in 2021, the barn actually held a grist mill and the saw mill was 100 feet down the river. The grist mill stone is still on the property and the breached earthen dam is still visible. “The barn for this house once held a sawmill powered by Pond Brook whose source is Taunton Pond. Later in the 19th century it was a hat shop, then a comb shop. In the late 1800s nearby Mt. Pleasant Road was known as ‘Slut's Hill,' a name deriving from the notorious presence in the region of houses of ill repute in the region east of Taunton Pond.” - Mitchell & Goodrich, p. 110.
