Field Notes

Charles Wakeley operated the Wakeley Plow Shop and foundry after 1820. In the 1860s Aaron Shelton operated a threshing and saw mill at this location - remnants of mill pond west of the buildings. House date: 1820; barns ca. 1900. Sources: “Southbury Tid-Bits of History,” un-dated pamphlet by Joyce Hornbecker, Prime Publishers, Inc., Southbury, CT. Southbury Assessor’s records. “Higher up this brook improvements were made as early as 1712, by one of the Strongs. In 1740 the Knowles, Strong and Hicock families united and put up a saw mill. Later a grist mill was there put up, which was operated by members of the Hicock family, when it was destroyed by fire. The past 20 years the power has been utilized by Charles Wakelee's plow factory.” (Rockey; 1892; II:782) John Dwyer has identified these activities and dates here on maps and land records: -1838: Ransom Judson: saw & grist -1858: Charles Wakelee's plow factory. Hicock and his heirs and business partners the Sheltons had another mill and merchant complex just down the stream in the town center. The storage barn associated with that site was recently razed.
